Unit 7: Music Sequencing

Editing the properties of note events:

  • Duration - When you need to change the length of a note you simply double click the track in question and select the mouse tool. This will allow you to drag the note from the edge to make it longer or shorter. Whilst this is a great tool it is only as easy as the sensitivity of the mouse you are using. It would be better if there was a keyboard shortcut to allow smaller/more accurate adjustment.

  • Note Position - To change the note position, you double-click on the track and select the mouse tool. You can move the note up and down to the correct note. This is good because it allows you to make corrections. However, if you don’t want the note to snap to a particular beat then you are out of luck. The note once moved won’t just stay in the same place or its very hard to keep it exactly how you recorded it. They should allow you to select the note then use the direct keys on the keyboard to help it stay in position but change the note.

  • Pitch - If you need to record an instrument at a different pitch, you can select the octave button on the midi keyboard when you record. This will automatically adjust the pitch of the note. However, if you have already recorded the track and then decide you would like it higher, then this is slightly tricky. Double-click on the track, drag and highlight the area/collection of notes and then drag the whole thing up or down your desired pitch. This again makes it difficult to maintain note position as it tries to snap the notes to a particular beat. Would be better if you could select the notes then press [up 8] or [down 8].

  • Velocity - If your recorded material needs a higher signal strength, you can adjust the velocity by double clicking on the track and then dragging along the bottom to your desired strength. This is great as you can be quite accurate for more expressive passages. However, if you wish you be more accurate you must click on the note and enter the number for velocity itself. This can take a long time.
